DESCRIPTION FOR FIRST FIVE VARIABLES:

The streamlines in each figure in the left column are shown in a frame of reference which moves at the same (zonal) speed as the wave pouch, and the (zonal) translation speed is indicated at the top of the left column. The right column figures are shown in the earth-relative frame of reference with a zonal speed of 0 m/s.

The purple curve represents the local critical surface, where the zonal flow equals the phase speed of the wave pouch. The black curve is the wave trough axis, where the meridional flow is zero and the relative vorticity is cyclonic. The black circle indicates the center of the pouch.

Relative Vorticity Unit: 10-5 s-1

ECMWF GFS UKMET NOGAPS

Okubo-Weiss Okubo-Weiss parameter, defined as relative vorticity squared minus strain rate squared:
OW = zeta2 - S12 - S22 = (Vx-Uy)2 - (Ux-Vy)2 - (Vx+Uy)2
Unit: 10-9 s-2

Relative Humidity Unit: %

Total Precipitable Water Total precipitable water in the column.
Unit: kg/m2

ECMWF GFS

Vertical Shear Vector wind difference between
500hPa and 850hPa (Pouch)
200hPa and 850hPa (Deep)
Unit: m/s

ECMWF Pouch Deep GFS Pouch Deep UKMET Pouch Deep NOGAPS Pouch Deep

"Dividing" Streamlines Vertical structure of pouch boundary as diagnosed by streamlines emanating from the stagnation point (= separatrix) + low-level moisture

Lagrangian Fields R-field: Attracting and repelling finite-time Lagrangian coherent structures as low/high values. S-field: High values show regions of persistent horizontal shear.
