SUMMARY of the JULY 2011 WEATHER ON THE MONTEREY PENINSULA

 

General:  Below normal temperatures and no precipitation characterized July 2011.

 

Temperature:   Again, for the sixth consecutive month, temperatures averaged below normal!  65.2°F is this month’s average daily maximum – it compares with 67.9°F as the long-term average.  The July 2011 average minimum, 51.8°F, is close to the long-term norm of 51.9°F.  High for the month, 78°F, was observed on the 3rd while the month’s low, 47°F, came a few days later, 5 July 2011.  Only seven July 2011 days saw the daily maximum exceed the 67.9°F norm.

 

Precipitation:  No precipitation recorded in July 2011 – not even a trace at the National Weather Service Climate Station, Monterey!  The July average is 0.07” on 2 days with measureable rainfall.  NOT a good start to the new rain year!  In July 1980, 0.73” was recorded as the record high July amount.

 

Wind:  No excessive wind gusts in July 2011.  28 mph was the peak gust at the NWSCS, recorded on three days (27, 28, and 30).

 

Fog:  July wouldn’t be the same without some fog. There were 14 days with light fog.

Following are comparative figures from eleven local observation sites:

  1. National Weather Service Climate Station (NWSCS), (elevation 385') located in the western hilly section of Monterey;
  2. National Weather Service Forecast Office (NWSFO) site (elevation 122'), located in the flat area of eastern Monterey, on the NPS Annex grounds adjacent to Airport;
  3. Naval Postgraduate School Campus (NPS) site, Monterey; (elevation 45');
  4. Ft. Ord (NPS) site (elevation 167') located just north of the Marina Municipal Airport (formerly Fritzschie Army Airfield). This is the site of the Naval Postgraduate School's wind profilers managed by Department of Meteorology;
  5. Marina site, SE end of Marina located about 2-1/2 miles ESE of Monterey Bay (elevation 80');
  6. Carmel Valley site near Carmel Village, vicinity of Ford Rd. and Lilac Lane (elevation 475’);
  7. Salinas site, vicinity of W. Blanco Rd. within 1/2 mile of S. Main St.;
  8. Carmel,  located on Rio Road near east end;
  9. Seaside, vicinity of Paralta and Military Aves;
  10. Pacific Grove site, vicinity of Sunset and Congress Streets;
  11. Big Sur Ranger Station, Highway 1, Big Sur.
